The Hedge
Week 1, Term 2 | Wednesday 1 May 2024 A weekly snippet of what’s happening ‘behind the hedge’ at Mercedes College...

Yitpi open to learn and play!

It was fantastic to see students using our new Yitpi Sports Centre on the Southern boundary this week, with learning and play happening from the first bell on Day 1 of Term.

Project Compassion fundraising success

Thank you to all of our families who helped us raise nearly $10,000 for Project Compassion, the annual Lenten fundraiser for Caritas Australia.

Culminating in a fantastic Caritas Day at the end of last Term, all monies raised will help Caritas Australia to support vulnerable communities in South Australia, interstate, and around the globe.

The whole Campus came alive to the sights, sounds and smells of the day – from pizza and sausage sizzles, to jewellery stores, popcorn stands and games for young and old – thank you for your support and generosity.

PEG this afternoon

You are still able to register for this afternoon’s Parent Engagement Group Meeting, either in person or online, 2pm – 3pm in our Staff Room (opposite the Mercedes College Café).

Thank you again for supporting PEG – we love to hear your thoughts and get your feedback and input. There will be a presentation at this meeting from Lauren Vilanova, Learning Area Leader – Performing Arts.

Today’s agenda is available here.

Old Scholar Art Accolade

Congratulations to Class of 2023 graduates Yoo Jung Choi and Violet Pye, who have had their SACE visual arts works selected by the Minister for Education, Skills and Training, Blair Boyer MP, for a 12-month display. You can see them at the Department for Education, 31 Flinders Street Adelaide.

Winter Sport Season Underway

The Winter Sport Season has officially started this week, and we are hosting netball, basketball and soccer games this Saturday morning.  We are looking forward to sharing our new facilities with students as well as visiting schools.

A big thank you to all our volunteer Coaches and Team Managers who attended our Winter Sports Launch last night in the Yitpi Centre. All our teams benefit from your time and expertise on and off the field and courts – we couldn’t run our Winter Sports without you!

Mother’s Day Lunch

We are nearly Sold Out for our Mercedes College Mother’s Day Lunch, being held at The Pavilion at Carrick Hill, next Friday 10 May.

Decorations are receiving their finishing touches, seating plans are almost finalised, and raffle prizes gathered for another wonderful lunch to celebrate mums everywhere!

If you would like to make a donation to our Mother’s Day Raffle, please email Jennie Bell – we are always delighted to hear from you and thank you for your support of our events and fundraising efforts.

Keep warm and dry in our Supporter Wear

Perfect for winter sports, camps and weekends away, you can pick up Mercedes College supporter wear at Strathspey Reception anytime during the school week.

Warm up with beanies and Camel scarves, or celebrate our 70 years with a commemorative 'M' cap! We'll also soon will have some new Mercedes College unbrellas – perfect for cheering from the sidelines this winter!

Invitation to Open Council Meeting

Each year, we hold an Open Council Meeting, where we invite our families to join the meeting and listen to updates from the Council.

This year, the meeting is on Monday 20 May, 7pm – 8pm in our Staff Room.

This is a great opportunity to hear from our College Council Chair and Principal about what has been happening at the College, and importantly, what is planned for the future – our vision and aspirations.

It’s also a chance to meet our College Council members and College Leadership Team.

If there are any particular topics that interest you in terms of the governance of the College, please feel to highlight these with Amanda Dyson in advance and we’ll see if we have the capacity to respond to these in the format of the meeting.

If you’d like to attend – either in person, or online – please let us know.

We’d love to see you there…

Emerald Ball Bookings now open!

We are excited to see our Emerald Ball tickets being snapped up to celebrate 70 years of Mercedes College, on Saturday 1 June at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

We are also pleased to confirm that tickets can now be purchased individually, as well as in a Table of 10.

When you buy a ticket and checkout, you can nominate a “Table Captain” and/or specific friends you’d like to sit with, and we will do our best to seat you together. If you don’t nominate anyone, we will pop you on a table of 10, and new friendships and connections will be made.

We have a wonderful night planned, with a delicious three-course dinner, all beverages, entertainment (both on and off the dancefloor), a silent auction and a few more surprises! So make sure you don’t miss out – and book your tickets soon – it will be a night to remember!

You have the right to remain EXCITED!

It’s time to think pink as rehearsals get underway for this year’s Musical: Legally Blonde Jr! Auditions have been held, and our cast is ready to start rehearsals and our crew are working on costumes, sets and much more. This brilliant production will be held in our new Gleeson Theatre from 14-17 August.

As Delta Nu Sorority sister Elle Woods follows her ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law School (“what, like it’s hard?”), she uncovers new friendships and self-belief amongst a riot of song and comedy. Get ready for a toe-tapping good time when the season opens and let’s look forward to a ‘sold out’ season!

Supporting Young Mums

Louise Place is a local support service for young mothers in need of a helping hand and at the end of Term 1, our Year 10 students made a generous delivery of gifted hampers containing baby items and other much needed items.

Thanks to Jess for talking with some of our students about the importance of Louise Place and how their contributions will make a difference to young mothers.
